In a year marked by relentless challenges, Puducherry found itself battling the wrath of Cyclone Fengal, which brought unprecedented devastation. The fierce storm compelled the regional government to appeal for a Rs 600 crore interim aid from the Centre to facilitate recovery efforts. As Puducherry's leadership continues to grapple with the inherent limitations of a Union Territory, a renewed call for statehood echoed through the territorial Assembly.
Chief Minister N Rangasamy's fiscal 2024-2025 budget was unveiled as tax-free, setting aside Rs 12,700 crore for the upcoming year. This financial plan aims to steer Puducherry towards recovery while dealing with the aftermath of extreme weather. The swearing-in of former IAS officer K Kailshnathan as the new Lt Governor also marked a significant political shift within the region.
The cyclone's destructive path left many parts of Puducherry flooded, forcing residents to rely on the Army for rescue operations. Meanwhile, on the political stage, the Congress party retained the lone Lok Sabha seat, sparking continued rivalry with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The civic aspects remained under administrative oversight, and unresolved tragedies, including the shocking crime against a young girl, highlighted the pressing need for effective governance and community welfare measures.
