Walmik Karad, closely linked to NCP Minister Dhananjay Munde, was taken into 14-day police custody in Pune over charges related to the Beed sarpanch murder case. His surrender came after the accused had evaded arrest for weeks, raising criticism from opposition parties.
The incident, involving the brutal killing of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, unfolded amid allegations of extortion and political motives. Deshmukh allegedly opposed an extortion attempt aimed at a windmill company. Four suspects were previously arrested, and Karad was named in the extortion case.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis faced intensified scrutiny over state law enforcement's shortcomings. The opposition insisted on a judicial oversight into the investigation, while community leaders warned of potential agitations if justice remained elusive. Political infighting has spurred calls for Dhananjay Munde's resignation due to his association with Karad.
