Subway Tragedy: Justice Awaits in Fatal Arson Case
A 61-year-old woman from New Jersey was identified as the victim of a fatal arson attack on a New York subway in December. The suspect, Sebastian Zapeta, is charged with murder and arson. The incident underscores NY's challenges with homelessness and subway safety, says Mayor Adams.
Authorities have identified the victim of a December 22 fatal subway arson in New York as 61-year-old Debrina Kawam, a resident of Toms River, New Jersey. Kawam met a tragic fate in Brooklyn, where she was set ablaze while on a subway train.
The accused, Sebastian Zapeta, was swiftly taken into custody after police released images from surveillance footage. Zapeta, reportedly an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, now faces murder and arson charges. He remains in jail as officials prepare to unseal his indictment on January 7.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has linked the incident to broader issues affecting the city, particularly the plight of homeless individuals. Adams emphasized the need for care-focused solutions for vulnerable populations rather than allowing them to live on the subway.
