An incident in Gujarat's Mehsana district has stirred public outrage after a video emerged showing a Kadi Municipality garbage van transporting a decomposed body to a local hospital. The transport decision, made by lower-ranked municipal employees, followed after no other vehicle was available for the task.
Municipal officers explained that the municipality currently lacks a mortuary van. The situation unfolded on December 29, when police recovered a decomposed body from Narmada canal. With the mortuary van recently scrapped and no other vehicles willing to take the task, the garbage van was used following persistent police urgings.
Chief Officer Sandip Patel stated that while the act caused community displeasure, the van was clean and hastily arranged due to the unusual circumstance. The municipality has since initiated steps to procure a new mortuary vehicle to prevent such incidents in future.
