In 2023, the northeastern state of Manipur became a focal point of ethnic strife as violent clashes erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs' annual report, Manipur accounted for 77% of the region's violent incidents, marking a concerning rise in unrest.
Throughout the year, escalating tensions led to 187 out of 243 violent events in the Northeast occurring in Manipur. This violence resulted in numerous casualties among civilians and security personnel, prompting repeated counter-insurgency operations that saw 33 insurgents killed and 184 arrested. Moreover, 80 insurgents surrendered, turning in 31 weapons.
The central government responded with immediate measures, deploying additional forces and engaging with state officials. The Union Home Minister's visit underscored the severity of the situation, as he conducted numerous meetings to address the escalating violence. Despite these efforts, intermittent violence persists, reflecting the ongoing complexity of the conflict.
