An Indian-origin man, Rishi David Ramesh Nandwani, was sentenced to four weeks in jail and fined SGD 4,000 after hurling racial slurs and throwing a tip box at a café cashier. The event unfolded at an upscale shopping area in Holland Village.
Nandwani pleaded guilty on Monday to charges of using insulting words and a rash act that endangered the victim's safety. The court heard he was at the wrong end of a queue and became upset after being asked to move to the back, launching into a two-minute verbal assault.
His actions distressed the cashier, who stepped away to let her superior handle the situation. Videos shown in court captured the altercation, showing other customers watching in silence. District Judge Janet Wang emphasized the necessity to protect service staff from abuse in her sentencing.
