In a significant verdict, a special CBI court in Ahmedabad has handed down five-year prison sentences to five people, including an ex-public sector employee, for involvement in fraudulent insurance claims dating back 22 years. This ruling includes a hefty Rs 23.5 lakh fine.
The convicted individuals, Dinesh Patel, Sanjay Chitre, Manan Patel, Shishupal Rajput, and Amar Singh Bialbhai, were found guilty of colluding with New India Assurance Company Ltd officials to sanction claims based on forged documents. The case saw charges against a sixth accused dismissed due to his death during the trial.
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) findings revealed a conspiracy among public servants and private individuals that caused a Rs 4.89 lakh loss to the insurance company. Rigorous investigations led to 25 witnesses and 228 pieces of evidence backing the prosecution's charges.
