Federal Court Upholds Verdict Against Trump: E. Jean Carroll Wins Again
A U.S. federal appeals court confirmed a civil jury's ruling that Donald Trump sexually abused columnist E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s, upholding a $5 million defamation and abuse award. Carroll brought the case following Trump's remarks in 2019, further supported by evidence from other accusers.
A federal appeals court affirmed a jury's decision that Donald Trump sexually assaulted columnist E. Jean Carroll in a department store in the mid-1990s. The ruling upheld a $5 million compensation for defamation and abuse awarded by a Manhattan jury.
Carroll first made the accusations public in a memoir, leading to a trial in 2023. Trump denied the allegations, did not attend the trial, but briefly appeared at a later defamation trial which resulted in another substantial award to Carroll due to Trump's defamatory statements made in 2019.
The 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals decisively dismissed Trump's legal team's claims of trial errors, maintaining the original court's decision. This legal battle highlights the ongoing national discussion around sexual misconduct and accountability for public figures.
