The Mizoram government is grappling with delays in the biometric data collection of over 32,000 Myanmar refugees, attributed to unsuitable forms provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The issue has put the enrollment process on hold, despite an extended deadline to December 31.
State Home Secretary Vanlalmawia stated that the forms, designed for deporting illegal immigrants, are ill-suited for refugees fleeing conflict. He mentioned that the state has requested revised forms from the Centre and is awaiting a response.
Concerns about potential conflicts with assurances given by Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding non-deportation have further complicated the process. The state government's decision reflects a cautious approach ahead of the state assembly polls in November 2023.
