Fourth Phase of Gold Hallmarking Expands Across India
The government has initiated the fourth phase of mandatory gold hallmarking, extending coverage to 18 additional districts. Since its launch in 2021, hallmarking has bolstered trust in over 40 crore gold items. The expansion raises covered districts to 361, with substantial growth in registered jewellers and hallmarking centres.

The government announced the launch of the fourth phase of mandatory gold hallmarking, extending the initiative to an additional 18 districts. This phase, effective from November 5, targets areas in states including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Haryana, among others.
Since the start of mandatory hallmarking in June 2021, over 40 crore gold jewellery items have been etched with unique IDs, providing consumers with greater transparency and trust. With this phase, the total number of districts now adhering to this mandate has reached 361.
The hallmarking initiative has significantly increased the number of registered jewellers from 34,647 to 1,94,039 and expanded assaying and hallmarking centres from 945 to 1,622. Consumers are encouraged to verify authenticity through the BIS CARE mobile app, where they can also report any misuse of the BIS mark.
