Gauteng Police conducted a major operation targeting counterfeit and illicit goods in Randburg, Johannesburg, resulting in the seizure of 896 counterfeit items valued at R1.8 million. The operation, carried out by the Gauteng Visible Policing Team in collaboration with brand protectors, focused on cracking down on the sale of fake and unlicensed merchandise. Among the seized items were counterfeit clothing, shoes, watches, and cellphone accessories.

During the operation, three suspects were apprehended on charges of dealing in counterfeit goods and are expected to appear in Magistrate’s Court in the coming days. The raid underscores the police’s commitment to curbing the sale of fake goods, which pose potential safety risks and mislead consumers.

A spokesperson from the Gauteng Police emphasized the importance of these operations, noting that counterfeit goods often fail to meet safety standards and can harm consumers while damaging legitimate businesses. “By removing counterfeit products from circulation, we are not only protecting consumers but also supporting legitimate trade and industry,” the spokesperson said.

Residents are encouraged to assist law enforcement by reporting any activities related to counterfeit trade. Reports can be made through the SAPS Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS App, where anonymous tip-offs can be provided.

Increased Efforts to Combat Counterfeit and Illicit Goods in Gauteng

The Gauteng Visible Policing Team has intensified efforts to identify and dismantle counterfeit operations across Johannesburg and other high-risk areas. In recent months, several raids have taken place as part of a larger campaign to ensure consumer protection and support the region’s economic integrity.

Community awareness initiatives are also underway, informing residents about the risks of counterfeit goods and how to identify them. Authorities stress that such products not only deceive buyers but often bypass safety regulations, making them potentially hazardous.

With this recent Randburg operation, police hope to deter further trafficking in counterfeit items and encourage community vigilance. The police department plans to continue its operations with ongoing support from local businesses, brand protectors, and community members.
