In a dramatic turn of events, a man accused of cow slaughter sustained injuries during a police encounter in the Mawana area of Meerut, officials reported on Thursday.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday when police were recovering butchery tools from the suspect, Amir. In a daring move, Amir tried to wrest a pistol from a sub-inspector in an attempt to flee, according to Station House Officer Rajesh Kumar Kamboj.
In the ensuing confrontation, Amir fired at the officers, prompting police to return fire, injuring the suspect in the leg. He is currently hospitalized, and charges have been filed against him under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
