U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith to Step Down Before Trump's Inauguration
U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith and his team plan to resign before Donald Trump becomes President. Smith is responsible for cases against Trump concerning classified documents and election interference, one of which was dismissed. Trump has pledged to fire him swiftly upon taking office.
U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith is reportedly planning to resign from his position, along with his team, prior to President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. According to sources cited by the New York Times, Smith has been at the forefront of two major legal cases involving Trump.
One case revolves around Trump's retention of classified documents post-presidency, while the other pertains to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. In July, a Florida-based federal judge dismissed the classified documents case. The Justice Department is currently assessing how to conclude the election-related case.
Trump has denied the allegations in both cases and has publicly stated his intention to dismiss Smith immediately upon taking office. The Justice Department has not responded to requests for comment outside of regular business hours.
