In a bid to enhance water security throughout the country, India is setting the groundwork for establishing a state-level Integrated Water Resources Management Authority. This new body, as revealed on Tuesday, will spearhead the development of water security plans encompassing villages, cities, and states.
Additional Secretary Rakesh Kumar Verma emphasized that the IWRM Authority will integrate various water-related departments while operating under an IWRM council led by the Chief Minister. The authority will also focus on groundwater and floodplain management and river conservation efforts as part of a new draft model Bill.
Amid rising concerns over industrial water use efficiency and India's limited waste-water recycling, the Ministry of Jal Shakti is pushing for transformative innovations and enhanced public-private partnerships. With global water challenges looming, the country's strategy reflects its commitment to meeting the United Nations' water security goals by 2030.
