Moldova Accuses Russia of Election Meddling and Airspace Violation
Moldova has issued a protest note to Russia over alleged meddling in its presidential election and a referendum on EU membership. Moscow denies allegations, but relations are strained as Moldova seeks EU integration. Moldova also condemned a violation of its airspace by drones crash-landing on its soil.
The Moldovan government handed a protest note to the Russian ambassador on Tuesday, accusing Moscow of meddling in a recent presidential election and referendum on EU membership. The Moldovan Foreign Ministry claims Russia attempted to delegitimize the elections, which were won by pro-Western President Maia Sandu.
Moscow has refuted the claims, with Russian Ambassador Oleg Ozerov stating the meeting with Moldova facilitated discussions on their strained bilateral relations. Moldova further accused Russia and fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor of influencing votes, alleging a scheme targeting 300,000 voters.
Additionally, Moldova condemned a breach of its airspace following the crash of two drones, believed to be decoys after a Russian assault on Ukraine. Russia denies involvement, maintaining it does not fly drones in Ukraine's neighboring countries.
