A new Islamist insurgent group, Lakurawa, has made headlines in Nigeria's northwest. Originating from Niger and Mali, the group, linked to Islamic State, has carried out its most significant attack to date, claiming 15 lives.
Lakurawa emerged in 2018, initially aiding locals against armed bandits. However, tensions rose as accusations of cattle theft and attempts to impose Islamic law surfaced. Following the unrest, the group retreated to Niger and Mali, sporadically crossing into Nigeria. After Niger's July 2023 coup halted border patrols, Lakurawa's presence in Nigeria has increased.
The Nigerian military, already stretched by other conflicts, now faces this new insurgency. Joint patrols with Niger have resumed, and Military leaders are rallying troops and seeking local support to counter this growing threat.
