In a significant escalation of violence in Manipur's Jiribam district, eleven suspected militants were killed during a gunfight with security forces on Monday. Armed insurgents targeted the Borobekra police station and an adjacent CRPF camp, leading to intense exchanges that injured two CRPF personnel, with one in critical condition.
The unrest led the Kuki-Zo Council to call for a shutdown in the hill areas on Tuesday. Officials reported that militants initiated the attacks, torching multiple shops and homes. Security forces responded forcefully, recovering the bodies of ten militants along with a cache of weapons post-firing.
Ethnic tensions continue to grip the region, exacerbated by recent incidents, including a woman's killing and widespread displacement. Reinforcements have been deployed, and investigation into the relentless violence and loss of lives is ongoing.
