The Supreme Court has temporarily paused a Calcutta High Court order that demanded a CBI probe into alleged torture during police custody of a woman protesting in West Bengal.

A bench, consisting of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, instructed the West Bengal government to present a list of seven IPS officers to form a new Special Investigation Team.

Previously, the high court had ruled in favor of a CBI investigation following the appeal of two women who alleged physical abuse in custody, highlighting inconsistencies in medical reports.
