The Election Commission's static surveillance team successfully intercepted a gold smuggling attempt in Dahisar, Maharashtra, on Sunday night. Officers seized 1.95 kg of gold, estimated at Rs 1.43 crore, during their routine checks, highlighting the vigilance in place ahead of the November 20 Assembly elections.

Two individuals carrying a suspicious bag were stopped and questioned, leading to the discovery of gold bangles. Claiming they were employees of a jewellery polishing unit, they failed to provide the necessary documentation for the gold's legality, prompting immediate action from the SST.

The incident has been reported to the income tax department for a more thorough investigation. This operation is part of a broader effort to monitor and prevent illegal activities as Maharashtra prepares for the upcoming elections.
