In a significant push for indigenous rights, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), part of the BJP-led coalition in Tripura, plans to submit a deputation to Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu. The demand centers on the speedy enactment of the Tiprasa Accord, aimed at safeguarding the interests of Tripura's indigenous communities.
The memorandum of understanding related to the accord was signed on March 2, 2024, between the Centre, the Tripura government, and TMP. However, TMP's leader, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, expressed concern over the lack of a clear timeline for the accord's implementation, drawing parallels with the Naga peace talks and TNV accords.
Debbarma emphasized ongoing negotiations with the Centre, prioritizing indigenous rights. The party insists on reserving 25 of the 60 Assembly seats for indigenous people and advocates for the passage of the long-pending 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill. The bill has broad political support, yet remains stalled in Parliament, prolonging the wait for constitutional protection.
