Tens of thousands of citizens took to the streets of Valencia on Saturday, demanding the resignation of the regional president due to alleged failures in the emergency response to recent catastrophic floods. Over 200 individuals lost their lives, with many more left missing after the disaster.
Clashes erupted between protestors and riot police outside Valencia's city hall as demonstrators began their march towards the regional government headquarters. Police resorted to batons to disperse the crowd.
Under scrutiny is Carlos Mazón, the regional leader, who has been criticized for the slow response and delayed flood alerts. Despite Spain's weather agency issuing a top-level warning, alerts were not dispatched to citizens' phones until hours after communities were flooded.
