At least fifteen people lost their lives and several others were wounded following a brutal attack in Nigeria's northwest Kebbi state by the emerging insurgent group Lakurawas. The assailants targeted a rural community after stealing livestock, according to local residents.
Since the July 2023 coup in Niger, a faction from herding communities along the Nigeria-Niger border has gradually formed into what is now known as Lakurawas. This new militant group staged its first attack in the village of Mera, in Kebbi's Augie local government area.
Witnesses report that the insurgents invaded on motorbikes, attempting to seize cattle. When villagers resisted, gunfire erupted, resulting in at least fifteen fatalities, including two insurgents. State officials, including the deputy governor, are collaborating with security agencies to thwart further violence.
