The UK's police watchdog is scrutinizing the Metropolitan Police following complaints from two women regarding allegations they made against Mohamed Al Fayed, the former owner of Harrods, for sex crimes.

After recent claims surfaced, the Metropolitan Police referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Stephen Clayman of the police's specialist crime team stated their goal to provide the highest standard of service and support. Al Fayed faced numerous allegations during his lifetime but was never prosecuted.

Since a BBC broadcast in September brought these issues into the spotlight, police are actively reviewing 21 previous allegations and have confirmed 40 new complaints of sexual misconduct. Harrods' current managing director has apologized to victims, denouncing Al Fayed's past conduct.
