A lethal confrontation broke out over a longstanding land dispute involving two Muslim guerrilla commanders and resulted in at least 14 fatalities in Pagalungan, Maguindanao del Sur, according to military and civilian officials.
The violence between the commanders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front erupted Wednesday, fueled by a whispered feud over 290 hectares of farmland in Kilangan village. However, a truce has been arranged by military and police mediators.
The tension underscores persistent security challenges in the southern Philippines, despite a 2014 peace agreement granting autonomy for Muslims in the Bangsamoro region. Thousands of guerrillas still await government amnesty as minor disputes continue to unsettle the area.
