The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has strongly criticized three district magistrates in Uttar Pradesh along with the member secretary of the state's pollution control board. They were accused of mechanically granting permission for mining in a turtle wildlife sanctuary, violating environmental laws.
The tribunal found clearances and permissions granted in prohibited areas to be a blatant breach of environmental regulations and an abuse of power by involved authorities. This covers an area across Prayagraj, Mirzapur, and Sant Ravidas Nagar.
The NGT has demanded explanations from the district magistrates and regulatory bodies on their justifications for such permissions, warning that if satisfactory answers are not provided, personal appearances may be required before the tribunal.
