The Orissa High Court has upheld the life imprisonment sentence against former legislator Ram Murti Gomango, convicted of murdering his wife five years ago. The special MP-MLA court's decision was maintained on Wednesday by a division bench comprising Justices S K Sahoo and Chittaranjan Dash.
The court substantiated the conviction based on forensic evidence, which included the discovery of antemortem injuries on the deceased's head. The court declared these findings incompatible with Gomango's claim of his wife's death being a suicide, citing them as clear indications of intentional murder.
Gomango, who is now required to surrender and pay the imposed fine, has a political history stretching back to 1990 but has been directed by the court to serve his sentence with no further interventions.
