Indonesian officials have detained Thomas Trikasih Lembong, a former trade minister, for allegedly granting an improper sugar import permit in 2015. The permit reportedly resulted in losses amounting to $25 million, as Indonesia had a sugar surplus at the time.
Prosecutor Abdul Qohar stated that the permit allowed the import of 105,000 metric tons of raw crystal sugar without consulting other state entities. This decision, he claimed, rejected industry ministry advice and caused financial damage to the nation.
Despite the arrest, authorities have denied any political motives behind the investigation. Lembong, who later became a critic of the current administration, was involved in recent presidential campaigns. Attempts to reach him or his legal team for comments have been unsuccessful.
