Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced the state's plan to construct 500 new multipurpose buildings aimed at offering refuge during natural disasters in coastal districts. These buildings can also serve as schools and community halls.
The initiative marks Odisha's continuous efforts in disaster management, stemming from painful memories of the 1999 super cyclone that claimed 10,000 lives. The state currently has 844 cyclone shelters compared to just 21 in 1999.
Majhi also revealed the advancement in the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force, with plans to add 10 more teams to the existing 20, enhancing rescue operations during calamities. Additionally, the government focuses on expanding protective mangrove forests and setting up a natural disaster management center in Bhubaneswar.
