The Madras High Court has issued a strong rebuke to prison authorities following allegations of abuse against inmates. In a landmark decision on Tuesday, the court emphasized that prison officials must not exploit their positions of power. The ruling came during the hearing of a petition filed by S Kalavathi, concerning her son Sivakumar, a life convict allegedly assaulted by prison wardens.
Justices S M Subramaniam and V Sivagnanam, presiding over the case, stated that inmates should not be subjected to inhumane treatment or used as labor in officials' residences. The court underlined that torture only exacerbates criminal behavior. It is imperative, the judges noted, that prisoners be punished according to law, without being dehumanized.
The High Court directed the Director General of Prisons to ensure inmates are not exploited for personal work by prison officials. It also called for regular inspections and inquiry into any reported abuses. Following the court's interim orders, a criminal case has been registered, and departmental actions initiated against offending officials.
