Authorities in Germany have indicted three men in connection with a thwarted plan to target a Jewish site in the western part of the country, prosecutors announced Tuesday.
The primary suspect, a 25-year-old German, had traveled to Istanbul in April with alleged intentions to join Islamic extremists in Syria. Failing to do so, he returned to Germany, where, along with an 18-year-old dual national, he allegedly conspired to assault a Jewish establishment in Heidelberg or Mannheim, aiming to provoke a police response. Their plans included releasing a video denouncing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's policies.
Prosecutors contend that the attacks were meant to sever German-Israeli ties. The suspects, already detained, face serious charges, including conspiracy to commit murder. The state court in Heilbronn is expected to determine if the case will go to trial.
