The Supreme Court has directed the Delhi High Court to prioritize the bail plea of student activist Sharjeel Imam, who faces charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in connection with the February 2020 Delhi riots.

During a hearing on Friday, a bench comprising Justices Bela M Trivedi and S C Sharma stated their reluctance to entertain the plea under Article 32, advising instead that Imam's request be addressed promptly by the Delhi High Court.

Senior advocate Siddharth Dave, representing Imam, noted the prolonged pending status of the bail application, initially filed in 2022. The Supreme Court pointed out that the High Court has scheduled the hearing for November 25, urging a speedy deliberation.
