In a significant ruling, the Delhi High Court has stalled the relocation of a 48-year-old elephant, Ranjitha, from Assam to a temple in the national capital. The court remarked on the lack of clarity regarding the necessity of moving the animal, following a petition by FIAPO challenging the transfer.

The court issued a notice to the Maa Baglamukhi Mandir Trust and instructed that the elephant should remain in her current location. FIAPO highlighted the health risks involved due to climate changes and long-distance travel for the pachyderm, who was accustomed to the lush environment of Assam.

The judges, noting the conditions for captive elephants, questioned the rationale behind keeping the animal in a smaller urban space. Pending a detailed evaluation by the Chief Wildlife Warden of Delhi, the hearing is set to continue on November 28.
