European Union regulators have dealt a significant blow to LinkedIn, imposing a 310 million euro fine for violations of the bloc's stringent data privacy laws.

Ireland's Data Protection Commission rebuked the Microsoft-owned social networking site, citing concerns over the legality and transparency of its personal data processing for advertising purposes.

The Dublin-based watchdog, LinkedIn's primary privacy regulator in the EU, found the company lacked lawful grounds for data collection intended for targeted advertising, contravening the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). LinkedIn maintains its compliance but commits to revising its ad practices to meet regulatory standards.
