Delhi's Lt Governor V K Saxena has acknowledged before the Supreme Court that he was unaware of the necessity for prior permission to fell trees in the Ridge area, a revelation drawing criticism from Congress leader Jairam Ramesh. Ramesh questioned whether ignorance of the law can be considered a legitimate excuse.
LG Saxena, in an affidavit submitted to a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, indicated he became aware of the tree felling incident after it was completed in February, following a notification from the DDA vice chairman received only in June.
Legal actions have been initiated against officials from the Delhi Development Authority who were involved, with the issue raising concerns about environmental law enforcement. Ramesh further emphasized the discrepancy between passing and implementing environmental laws.
