The Philippine President's office has called for a comprehensive investigation into the murder of a broadcast journalist in a southern province, aiming to bring the perpetrators to justice. Despite boasting one of the most liberal media environments in Asia, the Philippines remains perilous for journalists, especially in provincial areas.
Maria Vilma Rodriguez, a 56-year-old journalist, was shot three times on Tuesday by a lone gunman at a store near her home in Zamboanga City. This violent act has been condemned by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr's office and a journalists' group, with the Presidential Communications Office labeling the attack as barbaric and emphasizing the nation's commitment to freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.
A suspect was arrested on Wednesday, according to Zamboanga City police official Kimberly Molitas, although the suspect's identity has not been disclosed. Investigations are considering a family feud as a potential motive. This incident raises the tally of journalists killed since Marcos took office in June 2022 to five, and brings the total number since the country's democratic restoration in 1986 to 200. Calls are growing for deeper police investigations to avoid another unsolved case.
