A fatal shootout erupted just outside Culiacan, the capital of Mexico's Sinaloa state, resulting in 19 suspected gang members dead and the arrest of a local cartel leader, according to a Tuesday statement from Mexico's defense ministry.
The incident occurred on Monday, about 7 miles from Culiacan, when over 30 gunmen attacked soldiers. Authorities stated that some cartel members fled when federal agents returned fire. The captured suspect, Edwin Antonio 'N', is identified as a local leader within the Sinaloa Cartel.
Significant seizures included seven vehicles and nearly 30 firearms. This violence followed the arrest of cartel co-founder Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, who claims he was abducted and flown to the U.S. by another faction.
