The electricity department has lodged cases of power theft against notable political figures in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district. Among those accused are the son of a former minister and a former district president of the Samajwadi Party, highlighting potential political tension in the region.
Executive Engineer Naveen Gautam reported the discovery of an illegal electric wire connection at the residence of Aamir Bin Aqil, son of ex-minister Aqil ur Rehman, during a routine check. A case was filed under Section 135 of The Electricity Act 2003, and Aqil has been fined Rs 1.65 lakh.
In a separate incident, a case was filed against Firoz Khan, a former Samajwadi Party district president, for electricity theft. Khan claims the charges are politically motivated as he seeks a ticket for an upcoming by-election, and he has expressed concerns about his safety.
