Nigeria's Air Force Elevates Defense with New Acquisition of Italian Jets and Helicopters

Nigeria's air force is enhancing its capabilities with the acquisition of 24 Italian-made M-346 attack jets and ten AW-109 Trekker helicopters, according to a spokesperson. These purchases are part of a fleet renewal strategy aimed at boosting defense capabilities.

Air Force spokesperson Olusola Akinboyewa announced that the initial delivery of three M-346 aircraft is scheduled for early 2025, followed by phased deliveries until mid-2026. The Trekker helicopters are also expected to be delivered by early 2026.

Highlighting the strategic importance of these acquisitions, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar stressed the need for a maintenance hub to support the M-346 fleet. This move is critical as Nigeria confronts armed bandits and insurgencies such as Boko Haram and ISWAP. Recent acquisitions include Huey and Trekker helicopters, and Super Tucano jets, with Chinese Wing Loong II drones pending.
