Diplomatic Tensions Rise Between India and Canada Over Assassination Allegations
India's diplomats in Canada are central to an investigation by the Canadian government, causing diplomatic tension. Canada's Prime Minister Trudeau alleges Indian involvement in a Sikh leader's assassination on Canadian soil. India refutes these claims and criticizes Canada for lacking evidence, arguing it as part of a political agenda.
Diplomatic tensions have escalated between India and Canada, with Indian diplomats in Canada becoming 'persons of interest' in a Canadian investigation, according to a Monday statement by the Indian foreign ministry. India firmly denies these allegations, accusing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of engaging in 'vote bank politics.'
The strain in relations began in September 2023 when Trudeau declared that Canada had credible evidence of Indian agents' involvement in the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader on Canadian soil. India has categorically denied the claims, criticizing Canada for failing to provide supporting evidence.
In response to the growing rift, Canada withdrew over 40 diplomats from India in October 2023, following New Delhi's demand for a reduced diplomatic presence. Tensions deepened with a parallel U.S. indictment of an Indian national alleged to be involved in a New York assassination attempt. The standoff presents a challenge to bilateral relations, with India reserving rights for further action.
