Manipur Police have launched a dedicated effort to combat the alarming rise in extortion by underground groups and gangs, which has significantly intensified over the past 16 months. The state has established a special anti-extortion cell to address this urgent issue.
IGP (Intelligence) K. Kabib announced that these groups have been imposing illegal taxes on trucks and harassing various sectors under the guise of donations since ethnic violence erupted on May 3, 2023. The police, in response, have formed crack teams and increased vigilance in extortion hotspots.
Over 121 extortionists and more than 215 group members have been apprehended in the past year. Authorities are also coordinating with the CRPF for highway security and considering national agency involvement to address the widespread threat.
