Escalating Tensions: UNIFIL Attacked Amidst Israel-Hezbollah Conflict
Two UN peacekeepers were injured following explosions in southern Lebanon during ongoing Israeli-Hezbollah conflicts. The series of attacks, which resulted in the displacement of 1.2 million people and over 2,100 deaths, underscore the escalating conflict as both parties continue to launch aggressive operations.
Two peacekeepers sustained injuries after explosions rocked southern Lebanon near a UNIFIL watchtower, as confirmed by the UN peacekeeping mission on Friday. This marks the second disruption in 48 hours amidst ongoing clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, adding a further layer to an already complex scenario.
The conflict, a year-long battle ignited by Hezbollah's support of Hamas in the Gaza war, has reached new intensities. Israeli operations, targeting southern Lebanon and Hezbollah strongholds, aim to secure northern Israel and have resulted in mass displacements and substantial casualties according to Lebanese authorities.
Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi of the Israel Defense Forces vowed to continue the operations to ensure safety for Israeli residents. Meanwhile, a recent strike in Beirut killed 22 civilians, escalating tensions further, though a targeted senior Hezbollah official reportedly survived the attack.
