Uttar Pradesh Government Challenges Convict's Premature Release in Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is set to hear a plea from the Uttar Pradesh government seeking to reverse its directive over the early release of a convict involved in the 2003 murder of poet Madhumita Shukla. This move follows a legal precedent established in the Bilkis Bano case earlier this year.
The Uttar Pradesh government, represented by Additional Advocate General Garima Prasad, argued that according to the latest Supreme Court judgment in the Bilkis Bano case, only the state where an offender is tried and sentenced has the authority to decide on remission. This judgment overrode a previous mandate allowing Gujarat to consider remission pleas for 11 convicts, declaring the process as "playing fraud on court."
The complex legal wrangle has stirred significant attention, with implications for how the jurisdiction over remission pleas is determined, potentially influencing other cases beyond the Shukla murder case.
