Italian Defiance: UNIFIL Under Fire
Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto accuses Israeli forces of illegally attacking U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon, calling it a possible war crime. The peacekeeping mission UNIFIL, stationed in southern Lebanon, reported two injuries. Italy, despite its support for Israel, demands a thorough explanation.
Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has condemned an incident involving Israeli forces, accusing them of illegally targeting United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon, and suggesting the act could be considered a war crime. The U.N. mission, known as UNIFIL, plays a critical role in maintaining peace along the tense demarcation line with Israel.
According to UNIFIL, two peacekeepers were injured during these alleged attacks, which took place on both Wednesday and Thursday. "This was not a mistake and not an accident," stated Crosetto during a news conference, emphasizing the serious violation of international military law. He further noted his decision to summon the Israeli ambassador for clarification, which has yet to be provided.
Despite traditionally supporting Israel, especially in its conflicts with Hezbollah and Hamas, Italy has firmly opposed Israel's recent actions against UNIFIL. Crosetto clarified that Italy, part of the U.N. effort in the area, would not yield to Israeli demands for peacekeeper relocation from the border region.
