Mozambicans were on edge Thursday, eagerly awaiting the early results of the country's presidential election. The election day unfolded peacefully, but opposition voices have raised serious allegations of fraud and manipulation against the ruling party, Frelimo.
Vote counting commenced immediately after the close of polls on Wednesday evening, with preliminary results anticipated within days from the 11 provinces. The deadline for final results to reach the Constitutional Council is set at 15 days.
Frelimo, in power since Mozambique's 1975 independence from Portugal, faces accusations of election-rigging, a charge echoed by Venancio Mondlane, an independent challenger. Despite security concerns, voting proceeded in the conflict-ridden northern Cabo Delgado province.
