Nuclear Powers Convene Amid Rising Tensions
Five nuclear-armed states—Russia, the US, China, France, and Britain—are set to meet in New York to discuss escalating nuclear tensions and potential revisions to nuclear agreements. This comes after President Putin’s recent changes to Russia's nuclear doctrine and ongoing conflicts, stressing the importance of strategic risk reduction.
A high-stakes meeting among five nuclear powers—Russia, the United States, China, France, and Britain—is scheduled to occur in New York within the next two weeks. As reported by Russian state media, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov confirmed the plan but withheld details concerning the attending officials.
This assembly emerges as significant amid escalating nuclear tensions between Russia and the West, primarily due to the conflict in Ukraine. Last month, President Vladimir Putin introduced changes to Russia's nuclear doctrine, broadening the circumstances that could trigger the country's nuclear weapon use considerations.
In January 2022, prior to Russia's aggression in Ukraine, the 'nuclear five' issued a joint statement emphasizing the crucial need to prevent nuclear wars and mitigate strategic risks, underscoring their commitment to peace and global security.
