UN Commission Accuses Israel of War Crimes in Gaza
A UN commission condemned Israel for destructive attacks on Gaza's health care, accusing it of war crimes. The panel highlighted abuses against Palestinian detainees and criticized Israeli forces for targeting medical facilities, affecting civilians severely. It also accused Palestinian militants of committing war crimes.
In a damning report, a UN commission has accused Israel of systematically dismantling Gaza's health care system through persistent and deliberate attacks, equating these actions to war crimes and crimes against humanity. Israeli forces have allegedly targeted medical staff, obstructed evacuations, and raided hospitals, claiming militants hid there.
The panel, led by former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay, revealed that detained Palestinians, including children, faced widespread abuse, including sexual violence by Israeli security forces. Meanwhile, accusations of institutionalized maltreatment have been linked to Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who has justified harsh prison conditions as deterrence.
Additionally, the commission holds Palestinian armed groups accountable for war crimes, specifically concerning hostages subjected to physical and sexual violence. This complex conflict, marked by significant loss of life and massive displacement in Gaza, continues to draw international scrutiny, with global legal bodies investigating potential genocide charges against Israel.
