In a significant operation, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) apprehended five individuals on Wednesday over their alleged involvement in a Khair wood smuggling racket suspected of financing terror activities. The arrests were part of ongoing investigations following operations in Thane district.
According to officials, the ATS Mumbai received specific intelligence leading them to conduct a raid in Ratnagiri district's Savarde village. The operation dismantled a Khair, or catechu, wood smuggling racket that had been active across Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The arrested suspects, residents from various districts in Maharashtra and Karnataka, currently face charges of theft and violations under the Forest Act. Notably, this case links to the November 2023 NIA operation that uncovered an ISIS terror module, raising concerns about threats to national security.
