A special court in Jaipur has acquitted eight individuals accused in a 37-year-old case concerning the glorification of Sati. The court cited the 'benefit of doubt' as the reason for the acquittal, according to legal sources.

The case, which dates back to 1987, involves an incident in Diwarala village, Sikar, where Roop Kanwar, a young widow, allegedly committed Sati by burning herself on her husband's funeral pyre. The incident led to a procession in which the alleged Sati was glorified, prompting the registration of a case against 45 people a year later.

While 25 of the accused were acquitted in 2004, the recent judgment has added eight more to that list. As per legal representatives, four accused remain absconding, and some have reportedly died over the years.
