In a significant crackdown on cyber crime, over 20 Chinese nationals have been apprehended in a suburban area near Colombo. The suspects, aged between 22 and 49, were taken into custody for reportedly residing without valid visas and their alleged links to online fraudulent activities.
The arrests took place at a hotel in the Gorakana area of Panadura, where authorities, acting on a tip-off, seized multiple electronic devices, including laptops, mobile phones, and routers. These items are believed to be connected to potential financial fraud, according to local police reports.
The investigation is ongoing to determine if this group is associated with another batch of Chinese nationals arrested in Hanwella, who were also implicated in cyber scams. Earlier in the week, 30 Chinese individuals and six others were taken into custody in connection with similar activities in the same region.
