The Delhi High Court has called for a response from the city police regarding a plea filed by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and others, seeking permission to conduct a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar in the capital city.
A bench comprising Justices Prathiba M Singh and Amit Sharma sent out notices to the Delhi Police and Delhi government, directing them to respond to the petition from the Apex Body Leh, with the hearing set for October 22.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the police, argued that the plea lacked urgency. Wangchuk and his associates, who were detained by local police and released later, are pressing for Ladakh's inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which governs tribal areas in specific northeastern states as autonomous districts and regions.
